PAST

USS51 SHIRT

This jacket takes its inspiration from the M1951 wool shirt first released on January 22, 1951. The shirt was made from an innovative fabric, specifically designed to make it resistant to the cold temperatures of the winter.

The garment formed part of the innovative COLD-WET / COLD-DRY CLOTHING SYSTEM for uniforms of the time: The COLD-WET system and relative equipment was used for temperatures above 14° F, while the COLD-DRY system was used under 14°F and guaranteed thermal protection up to -60° F. The difference between the two systems lay in the number of layers used, which were designed to trap air to provide insulation.

A water-repellent outer garment was added to maintain dryness.
