PAST
THE ALOHA SHIRT
The Aloha shirt, commonly referred to as a Hawaiian shirt, is a style of dress shirt originating in Hawaii.
These dress shirts feature print designs and are short-sleeved and collared for the most part. They usually fasten with buttons, which sometimes run right down the front of the dress shirt and other times are just featuring on the upper chest (pull-over style). Aloha dress shirts usually have a left-chest pocket sewn on, which is often carefully lined up to ensure continuity with the print pattern. Aloha shirts may be worn by men or women; women's Aloha shirts usually have a lower-cut V-neck style. The lower hem is straight since the shirts are not meant to be tucked in.
Aloha shirts exported to the U.S. mainland and elsewhere are called Hawaiian shirts and are often vibrantly coloured with floral patterns or generic Polynesian motifs. They are an example of casual informal wear.
Traditional Aloha shirts for men (manufactured for local Hawaiian residents) are usually adorned with classic Hawaiian quilt designs, tapa designs and simple floral patterns in more muted colours. Contemporary Aloha shirts may have prints that do not feature any traditional Hawaiian quilt or floral designs, but instead may incorporate drinks, palm trees, surf boards or other tropical-island elements arranged in the same pattern as a traditional Aloha shirt.
Aloha shirts manufactured for local use are considered formal wear in a business and government environment and are thus regarded as a shirt, coat and tie (which is not ideal to wear in the warmer climate of Hawaii) in all but the most formal settings.
