POLAR BEAR
The polar bear, or white bear, is a species that lives around the North Pole in the Arctic Ocean.
It can reach over three meters in height if it stands on its back legs and can weigh over 280 kilos. Its fur is waterproof, long and oily, and its footpads are covered in fur. It is the biggest carnivore in the world.
Climate change and excessively warm temperatures are causing the glaciers to melt and this is a real threat to polar bears because, despite being excellent swimmers, as the amount of pack ice diminishes they struggle to find food and must swim further and more frequently in the open sea.
The Arctic regions are also increasingly subject to the extraction of minerals, oil and gas with industrial activities that put the environment of the polar bear and the other species of the Arctic at serious risk.
