RAFFLESIA S SLOWLY DISAPPEARING
Rafflesia Arnoldii is a genus of parasitic plants whose survival is completely dependent on a particular vine, the tetrastigma. This vine only grows in undisturbed rainforests. Rafflesia has no leaves, stems or roots and attaches itself to the host vine to obtain water, nutrients and physical support. Its flowers are among the largest in the world, reaching over 100 cm in diameter and weighing up to 10 kg, and although they take months and months to ripen, they only stay for a week at most.
Not only the size, but also the aroma emanating from Rafflesia flowers is decidedly distinctive and not too pleasant. This smell attracts dipterans, such as flies, or beetles that perform the important function of pollinators.
This incredible plant is in serious danger of extinction, in the last 30 years the surface area of the rainforest that is home to it is shrinking at an alarming rate: deforestation caused by fires is causing 12,000 square kilometres per year of tropical forest to disappear, and with it many of the animals and plant species that populate it.
