THE AMAZONIAN MANGROVE IS SLOWLY DISAPPEARING

Mangroves are a vegetation or forest formation, consisting of mainly woody plants, that grows on the low-lying shorelines of tropical seacoasts, particularly in the periodically tidal zone. They are widespread in the tropical and subtropical zones of both hemispheres, along the coasts of North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Mangrove forests play a critical role in combating climate change: they are considered Blue Carbon ecosystems, because they can absorb carbon dioxide from the air and store it for centuries in aquifers, and they also contribute to protect coastlines from the effects of flooding by functioning as natural infrastructures. At the same time, they provide a source of food and shelter for fish and other animals.

While it is true that mangroves are a faithful ally in the fight against climate change, it is equally true that mangrove forests are negatively affected by it. Rising seas, increased CO2, deforestation, rising air and water temperatures, and increased rainfall are putting their survival to the test.
