PAST

RUSSIAN SEAMAN’S STRIPED SWEATER

The story behind this top dates back to the seventeenth century, when French sailors started wearing a long-sleeve cotton top with blue-and-white horizontal stripes. It was called a marinière, and it set them apart from other maritime nations. In 1987, it made its way into the Russian navy and went under the name of telnyashka, from the Russian word “telo” (“body”), because the garment was quite close fitting.

The stripe pattern on the sweater was designed to enhance visibility. In fact, in the swirling dark sea mists of the Atlantic Ocean, a sailor dressed in a striped top was much easier to spot than one in a plain shirt. Another plausible explanation is that sailors were more clearly visible when adjusting sails. It has even been said that the bold stripes reminded sailors to keep an upright posture when on duty!
