LET'S SAVE THE INHABITANTS OF THE SEA!

Plastic pollution of our seas is one of the most serious environmental emergencies of our times. Seas and oceans are being filled with plastic and this is a global issue.

Each single year, about 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the sea, endangering the marine ecosystem, ruining beaches and harming human health (plastic can also “travel back up” the food chain via smaller organisms, such as plankton).

The tenuous balance between marine fauna and flora is being upset by the growing masses of multifarious plastic, and the food chain is being subjected to possibly irreparable harm.

There is another huge emergency caused by ghost fishing nets and abandoned cage traps used for capturing crabs, lobsters and shrimps, otherwise known as abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG). They affect the oceans in several different ways; the ghost fishing gear drifts from place to place, ensnaring fishes and other sea creatures without any benefit to mankind, but also smothering the coral reef. This ghost fishing gear accounts for about 5% of the amount of fish fit for sale all over the world. Abandoned cages become deadly traps for hundreds of crabs and other sea creatures.
