HELP SAVE MY ARMOURED FRIENDS / STOP POLLUTING THE OCEAN

Sea turtles are certainly one of the species that are most at risk of being entangled in floating plastic nets or ingesting plastic parts.

Until recently, we thought that the reason turtles were attracted by plastic (especially plastic bags) was because of its resemblance to jellyfish, a tasty meal for many species. In actual fact, plastic waste adrift in the ocean may become covered by a microfilm of bacteria, algae and tiny invertebrates, emitting an odour that lures turtles as they associate it with good foraging ground and attempt to feed off it.

And the turtles who are lucky enough to avoid this lethal trap are still not safe. Even jellyfish ingest plastic, which in turn will end up in turtles’ bellies.

Ingesting plastic leads to a series of physical issues, such as intestinal blockages, lower energy reserves, starvation and potentially even poisoning due to toxic substances that linger in the animal's system.

And the risk of being ensnared is extremely high. Many turtles get caught up in floating waste and either have trouble moving or become entirely incapacitated.

And as if the problem of polluted sea waters was not enough, plastic waste on beaches interferes with the nesting process. When the sand in which turtles lay their eggs is mixed with plastic fragments, temperature and moisture levels are also affected, with repercussions on the development and hatching of baby turtles.

Bottom-trawling, longline hooks and gillnetting are all techniques used by the fishing industry, and together with the havoc wreaked by discarded fishing gear, this has been the misfortune of sea turtles who get incidentally caught up and immobilised without any chance of escape.
